Some Ideas On Water Purification Systems:In a general way, we approach water purification systems design by a process of characterization, followed by minimization of the contaminant at the source and finally removal of the resulting, objectionable contaminant from the process or waste stream. Some systems are straight "off the shelf". Simple filters with known contaminant identities and quantities can utilize standard "off the shelf" components. The next level is working with removal of dissolved minerals. We need analytical work to determine the levels of the various components in the stream to be treated. Once the quantity of contaminants are known, it is easy to determine what size removal components are needed. Ion Exchange and Ion Exchange softening are examples of this kind of system. A final level is working with contaminants which are unknown both in terms of identity and quantity. In this instance, piloting is often used. Small scale simulations of the removal processes are performed on the stream in question. Often analytical work is done in conjunction with the piloting to find some variable on which to control the removal process. Taste, Odor and Organic Streams are often done in this way. One fundamental, but often overlooked parameter in systems solutions, especially in these times, is the time and level of available On-Site operators for the system. This operator factor often affects the system design including even the basic initial selection of removal equipment. While some locations may be able to use a filter press, both understanding the process and the time required to redress the press, another location with the same basic removals may require one of the more modern material handling, automated filter solutions. Operator availability is a key for us to determine together with our clients on system solutions.
