Ozone Generators
The subject of safety in the design and operation of an ozone system should receive a high priority. Filters Water & Instrumentation engineers have many years of experience selecting and installing ozone systems throughout New England. Ozone in the upper atmosphere protects us from harmful radiation, but excess ozone in the work environment causes serious health problems, corrodes most metals and damages most plastics.
Ozone is a toxic gas, and like chlorine can cause severe illness and death if inhaled in sufficient quantity. However, ozone systems have safety advantages not available with the chlorine disinfection process. Ozone is generated on-site, thus elinimating transportation hazards. Also, the generation system can be shut down if an ozone leak develops. Another safety advantage is the physical characteristics of ozone that allow it to be detected (smelled) at concentrations much lower than harmful levels.

The primary use of ozone is in bottled water applications as a microbial disinfectant. Ozone aids in the removal of tastes and odors. Other ozone applications in industry include:
- Bottled water and beverages for disinfection
- Plating industry for make-up and reclamation
- Fish and aquaculture for disinfection
- Ultrapure water systems as an organic scavenger
- Waste water treatment and odor control
- Waters with trace organics for organic destruction
