Factors to Consider when selecting a Filter Housing

When selecting a filter housing there are several factors to consider.

Type of Cartridge Seal
For high purity cartridge applications, where the filtration level is 1 micron or better, we recommend that you use a cartridge with a double O-Ring seal. This is either a 222-O-ring or a 226-O-Ring with a locking tab. Pleated styles can be seen on the chart on this link: Pleated Styles.

Inlets and Outlets
The second primary factor are the Inlet and Outlet sizes and types of connections. There are NPT, flanged and sanitary connections available to match up with your in house plumbing.

Method of Sealing Housing
If the Housing has to be opened frequently, the fluid is viscous, and if the contaminant is sticky and messy, we recommend a Captured O-Ring Groove as the Housing Seal. the drawing at the left shows a captured o-ring type seal.

For low level of clean contaminants and/or infrequent openings (once per week or less), the lesser sealing methods such as captured clamps can be used.

The housing photograph at the left is a sanitary stainless 12-round by 3-high housing with 3" Sanitary Tri-Clamp fittings.

Diameter of Cartridge

This is an often overlooked factor in considering a housing. Traditionally Industrial Housings for heavy and severe high viscosity chemical and other services have been designed for 2.5 Inch OD cartridges. Cleaner applications have generally utilized up to 3.0 Inch Cartridge ODs.

Other Factors to Consider:

• Length Of Cartridge
• Method of Sealing Cartridge: O-Ring or Knife-Edge
• Inlet & Outlet Pipe Sizes: Flanged or NPT
• Materials of Construction: Metallic, Plastics or Fluoropolymer
• Pressure and Temperature Requirements: Non-Code or Code
• Finish Levels: Rough Castings (Minimal Grinding)
• Ground Smooth, RMA Sanded
• Ground Smooth, RMA Sanded & Electropolished

The photograph at the left shows a single round single high sanitary housing which has a double 226 o-ring and locking tab as it's method for sealing the cartridge. Notice also the sanitary the vent valve at the top.

The drawing at the right shows an Industrial Housing with the OSHA required lifting tower.

Housing Internals Explained

On the left, is a photo of the inside of a cartridge filter housing. You can see the deflection plate at the top of the housing which distributes the incoming water flow more evenly inside the housing.

At the right we have a photo of a single cup and post assembly. The hole in the center is 1" and takes the filtered water down and out of the housing. The cup is the upright section which not only "knife-edge" seals flat gasket cartridges but also is the right size to accept double 222-O-Ring cartridges.(See Cartridge Styles for more information on Cartridge Types).

Finally, the hole in the center is also the right size to accept centering posts for cartrige lengths over 10".
